Hear our story of how we got started and why we want to help.
Meet Gena, a cancer survivor who found hope and support at our center. Through her journey, Gena discovered the power of resilience and the importance of community. Her story is one of courage, determination, and triumph over adversity. At our cancer center, we’re honored to be a part of Gena’s journey and inspired by her strength. Join us in celebrating Gena’s resilience and the hope she brings to others facing cancer.
“I started Gena after my own tragic encounter with cancer. In 2019, my mum was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme, a terminal form of brain cancer. Our world was completely turned upside down by the devastating prognosis of a disease with an average life expectancy of about a year.
Over the course of my Mum’s cancer journey, we experienced first-hand the limitations of conventional treatments offered by the National Health Service.
We believed we could do more than just accept the 20-year-old protocol, (often misleadingly called a “gold standard”), that was all the NHS could offer to people living with GBM. We found ways to provide therapies for Mum that went significantly beyond what the NHS could offer, based on the sequencing of her tumour’s genetics and recent research. Through this approach, we likely extended Mum’s life by an extra year, which, when the median overall survival for the disease is little more than a year, is incredibly precious.
Motivated by this experience and fueled by a desire to help other patients facing similar challenges, I envisioned a company that could help make personalised medicine a tangible reality for all. We recognise how fortunate we were to be able to explore alternative treatments outside the NHS, and that for many patients this isn’t an option, that’s why our vision begins with tackling the accessibility and affordability barriers of tumour genomic sequencing and genetic profiling – an important first step to more personalised cancer care.
Gena is dedicated to offering accessible genomic sequencing and helping patients manage their cancer treatment more effectively, giving them better access to clinical trials, personalised therapies, and off-label drugs.
Sadly, Mum passed away on the 11th of January 2021, despite everything we did, this profound personal experience, coupled with a commitment to transforming cancer treatment, has become the driving force behind Gena.”
